Ode To Workingman's Ed - By Beth McClendon

The pain of his passing eased in December of '06
When I went to the Ashkenaz and heard some brain-melting licks.
Jerry had been gone for more than 11 years
But the music that night brought a flood of hot tears.

My friend and I went straight to the stage
Where Workingman's Ed blew our minds off the page.
These five men playing good ol' Grateful Dead.
"Thank God they were AWESOME, just PERFECT for heads"

When Stu plays and sings, the goose bumps appear
On every Deadhead both far and near.
His talent and charm astound every crowd,
And you know up in heaven, Jerry is so proud.

Stu's partner in crime is adorable Pat.
He rocks the shit out of Bobby songs and we love him for that.
"Nevins does Dylan" is always a thrill,
Our harmonica wizard sure fits the bill.

When you go to a show to see Pat and Stu,
You'll feel all better when they play "Baby Blue"
When they play "Comes Time" and a blind man takes your hand,
You think to yourself, Workingman's Ed, what a band!

It's always really fun to dance right up close,
To watch fingers flying and those who are dosed.
We love Jeff's great bass lines and James' rockin' keys,
Watch Mark's beating drumsticks and you will be pleased.

These guys ROCK my world, and they rock many others,
The Edheads are now family and we love y'all like brothers.
Whether friends come with me, or I go alone,
When I re-read my setlist, I know I am home.

When they play Fourth Street Tavern, if you stand by the door,
You can almost hear trains from Terrapin Station roar.
Once in a while you get shown the light,
At 19 Broadway, if the band's there that night.
